Welcome to the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, consisting of some of the busiest, most dedicated and hardest working faculty and staff to be found at any College of Veterinary Medicine. Our faculty, residents and interns, graduate students and support staff are dedicated to our triple mission of teaching, research and service, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
A major mission of our college and department is to provide the best possible teaching environment for our students, and with this in mind, our faculty strive for excellence in student education. With more of our graduates entering small animal practice than any other area of the profession; faculty in SACS shoulder a large percentage of the total teaching responsibilities in the college.
In 2007, department clinicians received more than 15,000 patients in the small animal hospital. We focus on providing the best possible care for our patients, and continue to expand our cutting edge diagnostic abilities. This year we also break ground for a new 90,000 square foot hospital.
Our faculty are also focused on enhancing the body of knowledge about animal health and disease and have been awarded numerous grants and contracts for scientific studies that will directly benefit our patients. Another outcome of this research is the publication of scholarly papers in respected peer reviewed journals. Our faculty also deliver many scientific and continuing education presentations at meetings across the United States and around the world.
SACS faculty members also play a significant leadership role within the profession. The department boasts eight current or past presidents of professional colleges and societies and our faculty serve on numerous national and international boards, panels and committees.
Nearly all recognized small animal veterinary specialties are represented in the department but we are recognized nationally and internationally for our clinical and research programs in dermatology, nutrition, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, and zoological medicine. Visitors from around the world are welcomed in our hospital and research laboratories. We also offer a “Visiting Practitioner Program” (see above link in "Programs") in which we provide a unique continuing education experience for visiting practitioners.
Small Animal Clinical Sciences will continue to evolve to meet the needs of our students, patients and pet owners. Patient care is rapidly changing as a result of new technologies and knowledge. We never lose sight of the needs of the patient and always adhere to the spirit of an unofficial motto 'folks don't care how much you know until they know how much you care'.
We care!
